VIENNA AIRPORT

During World War II the construction of an small airfield between Schwechat and Fischamend was the beginning of Vienna International Airport. After modifying the runway 11/29 up to 3000m in 1959 and the opening of the new passenger terminal, the number of handled passengers grew up to two millions in the early seventies.
Already in 1977 the second runway (3600m, 16/34) was constructed as a reason to the fast growing number of passengers. Five years later in 1983 Austrian Airlines officially named Vienna Airport as its homebase and offered it as its hub. This development helped to increase passenger numbers up to 15,9 millions in 2005. Moreover a new terminal, which will be finished in 2008, will help to handle more passengers more comfortable.

The traffic at Vienna Airport consists of flights of the Austrian Airlines Group, which includes also Tyrolean Airways and Lauda Air. So there can be seen all planes from Dash 8 to Airbus A340 and Boeing 777. Beside the red- white- blue planes Lufthansa, KLM/ Air France, British Airways and Alitalia are frequent visitors. Macedonian Airlines, Viaggio Air and Tarom are the common airlines of Eastern Europe. China Airlines, Asiana Cargo, Eva Air Cargo and Korean Cargo offer flights from/ to Asia. Other freight airlines are TNT and UPS operating their flights mostly during the night.
